Guide
Inside vs Outside Roulette Bets
Quick Summary
- Inside bets cover specific numbers; outside bets cover big groups.
- Outside bets win more often and pay less.
- On the same wheel, the house edge is similar for both.
- Choose by the kind of session you want and your budget.
Short verdict: the choice between inside and outside bets is a choice about rhythm, not about beating the wheel. Inside bets are rare big wins; outside bets are frequent small ones. Over time the wheel takes about the same share from both. If you open a roulette table in the TK1971 live lobby, this page will help you understand the layout before you place chips.
The layout in one minute
The table has a grid of numbers one to thirty-six, plus zero. Chips placed on the grid or on its lines and corners are inside bets. The areas around it, labelled red, black, odd, even, high, low, dozens and columns, are outside bets.
The zero sits at the top of the grid on a European wheel. American wheels add a double zero. Always look at the wheel before you sit, since the extra zero raises the cost of every bet.
Inside bets
A straight-up bet on a single number pays thirty-five to one on standard tables. A split covers two adjacent numbers and pays seventeen to one. A street covers three numbers in a row, a corner covers four, and a six line covers six.
The more numbers you cover, the lower the payout and the more often you win. Quick check: the payout chart on the table or in the help screen is the authority, not this page, so look before betting.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Typical payout |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35 to 1 |
| Split | 2 | 17 to 1 |
| Street | 3 | 11 to 1 |
| Corner | 4 | 8 to 1 |
| Six line | 6 | 5 to 1 |
Outside bets
Red or black, odd or even, and high or low cover eighteen numbers each and pay even money. Dozens and columns cover twelve numbers and pay two to one. The zero beats all of them, which is where the house edge sits.
On a European wheel, a red bet wins in roughly eighteen of thirty-seven outcomes. That is just under half, and the missing share is the cost of playing.
Which should you choose?
If you want long sessions on a modest budget, outside bets last longer. If you accept short sessions in return for a chance of a large payout, small inside bets suit you. Mixing both is possible, but remember the edge applies to the total staked.
Do not use a system of doubling after losses. A table limit or a depleted balance will stop it. For other table options see live roulette, and for a game with a clear two-way choice, read banker vs player.
Habits that help
Count spins, not minutes. Decide a total number and a total stake. Treat each spin as independent: the number history on screen does not influence the next result.
If you start raising your stake after losses, close the table. Our session plan page gives a way to set a stop rule before you play.
Special bets on live tables
Many live roulette tables add neighbour bets, racetrack layouts and bonus multipliers. Neighbour bets cover a number and the ones beside it on the wheel, which is just another way of covering several numbers at once. The racetrack view helps you place them, but the maths is the same.
Multiplier rounds, where some numbers get boosted payouts, make the screen exciting. They also change how often each bet pays, so read the rules shown for that table. If you cannot work out how a bonus round changes your odds, skip it and bet plainly.
Plain betting is easier to track. You know what you staked, what you covered and what the wheel took. That clarity helps you keep to a budget.
If you find that bonus rounds or special bets keep drawing you into larger stakes than planned, switch to a plain table without extras for the rest of the session, or end it. Keeping the format simple keeps the cost visible.

Questions people ask
Which roulette bets are best?
On the same wheel they carry a similar house edge. The difference is how often and how much they pay.
What does a straight-up bet pay?
Thirty-five to one on standard tables, but check the table's own payout chart.
Why does the zero matter?
Zero makes all standard outside bets lose, and it creates the house edge.
Can I win with doubling systems?
Table limits and finite balances end them. They do not change the odds.
