Odds Formats Explained: Decimal, Fractional, American

Quick Summary

  • Decimal odds show total return per unit staked.
  • Fractional odds show profit relative to the stake.
  • American odds use plus and minus numbers around 100.
  • All three describe the same prices in different clothing.

Short verdict: odds formats are three ways of writing the same thing, and decimal is the one most Bangladeshi bettors meet on cricket pages. Once you can convert between them, you stop being confused by a friend's screenshot from another site. Which format TK1971 shows you is a setting on its own site or app, so check there; this page is the translation guide.

Decimal odds

Decimal odds give the total return per unit staked, including your stake. A price of 2.50 on a 100 Taka bet returns 250 Taka, of which 150 is profit. A price of 1.40 returns 140 Taka, a profit of 40.

The format is easy because you only multiply. To estimate the market's implied chance, divide one by the price: 2.50 implies about forty percent.

Fractional odds

Fractional odds, common in older British betting, show profit relative to stake. A price of 3/2 means 3 profit for every 2 staked. On 100 Taka, profit is 150 and the return is 250. A price of 1/2, written 'one to two', returns 50 profit on 100.

Even money is 1/1. To convert to decimal, divide the fraction and add one: 3/2 becomes 1.5 plus 1, which is 2.50.

2.001/1+10050%
2.503/2+150about 40%

American odds

American odds use a positive or negative number. A positive number shows profit on a 100 stake: +150 means 150 profit. A negative number shows the stake needed to win 100: -200 means you must stake 200 to profit 100.

To convert a positive price, divide by 100 and add one. To convert a negative price, divide 100 by the number without the sign and add one.

Which to use

Use whichever you read fastest, as long as the site lets you choose. Do not mix formats while comparing offers. Convert everything to decimal first; it makes comparison simple.

Quick check: odds that look generous in one format may simply be unfamiliar. Always calculate the return in Taka before staking. Our cricket odds guide shows how the margin hides inside prices.

Common mistakes

The most common is mistaking profit for return. In decimal, the price includes your stake; in fractional, it does not. Another is treating a short price as a sure thing. A price of 1.20 still loses about one time in six if the market is right, and the margin makes it a little worse.

Also be careful with accumulators, where prices multiply. The potential return grows, but so does the chance that one leg fails. See the BPL betting guide for staking habits that apply across tournaments.

Practice with Taka figures

Take a 200 Taka stake. At decimal 1.80, the return is 360 and the profit is 160. At decimal 3.00, the return is 600 and the profit is 400. In fractional form those are 4/5 and 2/1. In American form they are -125 and +200.

Try the same for your usual stake. Say each price aloud, then say the return aloud. After a few repetitions the conversion becomes automatic, and you will spot misleading screenshots that quote profit as if it were return.

Do the sum before every bet, even a small one. It costs ten seconds and keeps your picture of risk honest. For more on how bookmakers build margin into prices, read cricket odds and the handicap markets article.

If a site lets you choose the odds format in settings, pick decimal and leave it. Switching formats mid-session is a good way to misread a price, and misreading a price is an expensive way to learn.

A final reminder about margins: converting formats will not reveal hidden value. All three formats carry the same margin, so a poor price in decimal is still a poor price in American. Convert for clarity, not for hope.

How do I turn fractional into decimal?

Divide the fraction and add one. 5/2 becomes 3.5.

Are odds a prediction?

They are prices with the bookmaker's margin included. They imply a chance but promise nothing.

Where can I change the odds format?

Look in the settings of the official TK1971 site or app, if offered.
